It’s that time of the year again… Marco and I have started booking flights and are finalizing the travel plans for the Christmas break. Time to start thinking about gifts
When I first moved to Texas, many of my relatives starting getting typical US/Texas gifts (from cowboy hats to university gear). Now that I’ve lived here for a while, it’s more difficult again. Some people are easy to buy for, some are harder. But overall, I keep running into the same problem: My Christmas is usually spent on the road. So, I have to find gifts that are either easy to transport in my luggage (light and not too big) or that I can buy once I’m there. But that’s usually a little too last minute for my taste… Plus, a lot of times, we meet in places to which many of the gift recipients have to travel as well. And they too need to transport their gifts home somehow. So, back to gifts that are easy to transport
Here are some things that I think work well for the travelling gift giver/receiver. Maybe there’s an idea in here you can use on your next trip or for somebody visiting you.
- Gift cards to a store close to the recipient’s home
- Tickets to an event close to the recipient’s home (if the tickets are sold online)
- Baby clothes for new parents (because they are tiny and don’t weigh much)
- Small electronics (e.g., small camera, iPod)
- Computer games & video games of any kind
- Jewelry and watches
- Scarves & gloves
If you know of other gifts that work well on the road, please let me know! I’d be happy to read about them in the comment section ;)

If you are shopping online you can also have larger items shipped directly to the recipent. We do that with my siblings who we don’t get to see at Christmas. Don’t forget gift cards to someones favorite restaraunt as well.
Good ideas! I especially like the shipping to somebody’s home. Then you can just bring a printout of whatever you bought to wherever you’re meeting and they have something to look forward too
We have given gifts to needy children or to a food bank in the recipients name. Then we send them a card telling them about the gift. We and our children exchanged gifts this way several times. It is best if everyone agrees in advance. It is giving the gift of giving.
That is really nice, Fletch!
