Happy 4th of July!! Marco and I took advantage of the long weekend by taking a trip to San Angelo and the Sonora Caverns. Most cities in Texas cancelled their firework shows because of the drought here. Understandably everybody is afraid of more wildfires. San Angelo was one of very few cities that still had fireworks in their 4th of July celebrations. Lucky us! In fact, San Angelo had three or four firework shows planned just this weekend. We watched the one following the Pops Concert on July 3rd. There were nice grass patches in front of the Visitor Center, so we hung out there and enjoyed the show.
Check out some of our fireworks pictures and videos: a high speed/slow motion video of the fireworks, another video in regular speed, some pictures (including a very cool one with a girl in front of the fireworks), and – my favorite – some mini-time lapses of fireworks pictures.

July 4 is my wife’s favorite thing about the U.S. She loves the fireworks on a summer evening.
Cheers.

I’m a big sucker for fireworks as well
I don’t even care about the occasion much – no offense to July 4th of course.
Great pictures! I love fireworks but have not been real successful with taking pictures of them. These were good.

Thanks! I love them too. One of the reasons I love New Year’s in Europe with fireworks everywhere in the sky. Marco took them with a special setting on his camera. It took three at a time (one second apart I think) and with the shutter open for 2 seconds. Maybe your camera has a similar setting? You just have to keep it really steady. We left it on the ground pointing up.
Great photos. Photographing fireworks is pretty tricky. Congrats!

Thank you!! It was fun watching them and our camera had some special setting that made it easier (like I replied to Debbie above).
Mine has a bulb setting, which is great for fireworks. Put it on the tripod, open the shutter and let it go. Trouble is, there were so many people up there a tripod would have been impossible. So, had to shoot hand-held. Maybe next year I’ll get up there much earlier…

I just had to look up “bulb setting”
So, how long to you usually keep the shutter open? We didn’t have a tripod either…
In the case of fireworks, probably not more than 30 seconds. For that long, you must have a tripod unless you’re made of stone. The problem arises if there are too many people around you shooting with pocket cameras and their flashes are going off; that will ruin your long-shutter photos. So yeah, sort of a pain in the butt!

Thanks for explaining! 30 seconds sounds very long. And I hadn’t even thought about the flash from other people’s cameras…
So jealous that you got to see fireworks!!! They were canceled here in Austin, so it was pretty anti-climatic. We all wore red, white, and blue, but didn’t have much to do except to go to a bar! I was surprised that the city canceled the whole celebration–there is normally outdoor music and other festivities to go along with the fireworks show. Glad you were able to see some!

I know! I think San Angelo was one of the very few cities in Texas that didn’t cancel their fireworks. I was surprised that Austin cancelled them when I heard about it. We were there for the 4th of July a few years ago and watched them from Zilker Park. Amazing! And I think it was even coordinated with the music in the background if I remember correctly.
So beautiful, Americans really know how to do fireworks. I was once in Washington D.C. for the 4th of July and couldn’t believe how much bigger and better they were than the ones we have in Canada for Canada Day.

Did you like the fireworks in Germany for new Year’s? I think that’s the biggest fireworks night in Germany – much more so than on our national day.
I had to live vicariously through your awesome photos since our fireworks were cancelled! You always make Texas look good
