When Easter falls late in the year and you still want to get some skiing in before the season is over, consider skiing in the Italian alps. It’s beautiful! Even when you are on top of the mountain, you are right between other big mountains. And get beautiful views all the way down to the valleys. The fake snow has been getting better and better. So even in a warm, sunny year, you can still ski very well – up until about lunchtime when the warmth has turned the snow into heavy mush. I took that as a good excuse to spend some quality time in the wellness center of the hotel after lunch 😉 And the advantage of skiing this late in the year? You can often have lunch outside in the sun while enjoying the views. So, where to ski in April? Well, the Kronplatz of course. Or Plan de Corones as the Italians call it.
Kronplatz/Plan de Corones
Since I was little, my family has been going to the Kronplatz ski resort. It is a huge ski resort with tons of slopes close to Bruneck/Brunico. While it’s an Italian ski resort, everything exists in German and in Italian. Most cities have two names. Most people speak both languages really well. And you get the best of both worlds in terms of food too. Since I’ve been skiing there as a kid, it actually never occured to me that eating lasagna, other pastas, a Germknoedel or Kaiserschmarrn for lunch wasn’t neccessarily what all skiiers did. Silly, right? But when we went skiing in Santa Fe for the first time, I was really kind of stumped when my lunch choice was a burger or a bowl of chili.
The downside of skiing so late in the year that the mountains around you and the valleys are not completely covered in snow. That and the fact that it’s weird to hear the birds chirping when you’re on your way up in the gondola… But it’s still plenty beautiful as you can see below.
March Pic With More Snow
As a comparison, here is a pic from March 2016. It was colder and had recently snowed:
